Mixed Martial Arts: A Way to Become an Effective Combat Fighter

Mixed Martial Art fighting is a full contact sport, with a wide range of techniques such as striking and grappling; during tournament and sparring sessions this can be witnessed.  Mixed Martial Arts emerges after one has honed and perfected all of the existing techniques of different types of martial arts from around the world.   Different classes are chosen based on weight.  In Mixed Martial Arts fighting, fighters are prohibited from using the head butt.  In competitions, fighters do not wear protective head gear.

To ensure safe fighting during competition, Mixed Martial Art fights are framed with more rules.   One important rule is that fighters have to undergo physical examinations on a regular basis before fighting.  Rules vary from competition to competition.

Striking and grappling are the two main categories to judge a fighter in Mixed Martial Arts fighting. Whereas, striking techniques are composed of punches, kicks and use of the knees to take down an opponent.  In grappling techniques; sweeps, holds, throws and take-down methods are applied.  Biting, small joint manipulation, eye-gouging and fish-hooking are prohibited.  During sanctioned events; head butts, elbowing, spinal locks and strike to the groin are considered strictly illegal.

The present superstars in Mixed Martial Arts competition are very big names such as Chuck “The Ice Man” Liddell, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Forrest Griffin, Randy “The Natural” Couture and many more.  They are the milestones in Mixed Martial Arts and they have forever changed the face of Martial Arts as we know it.

Fitness and conditioning are very vital, as each bout may take a longer time than expected. Often, audiences get tired of the lengthy bout but never the fighters.  This is how one knows the true stamina of the contestants.  The lengthy bouts are restricted to fixed time schedules.

Mixed Martial Arts fighting started in the United States in 1993.  The United States Athletic and Boxing Commission came forward to help finalize the rules for Mixed Martial Arts competitions. All these rules are framed to ensure the safety of amateur and inexperienced fighters.  The fan base for Mixed Martial Arts fighting is increasing day by day and they are demanding more competitions.
